Keeping Your Child Latex-Safe at School

In order to be effective, latexmust be avoided in all spheres of life—inmedical settings, at home, in school and inthe community. Latex avoidance not only prevents allergic reactions in children whoalready have a clinical latex allergy, it also minimizes the risk of creating new sensitization inchildren at high risk for developing this allergy. In general, avoidance strategies in theschool must balance two potentially contradictory needs: maximum inclusion of the child inschool life and activities, and safety frompotentially life-threatening exposure to latex.Designing an individual school latex-safetystrategy for each child with spina bifidarequires cooperation between the child andparents, the school nurse, teachers andadministrators.This article reviews four important componentsof this cooperative effort: working with theschool, surveying the environment for potentialexposures, designing emergency protocols andpromoting self-care behaviors in the child. Working with the SchoolDiscussion with school staff is the first step increating a latex-safe school environment. Articles about latex allergy have been published inthe specialty health care literature and inschool health journals and many schools areknowledgeable about latex avoidance. If yourchild is entering a school that has not had priorexperience with latex allergy, it is importantfor the family to keep in mind how unbelievableand overwhelming this information can be atfirst.

It may help to:

1. Begin working with the school several monthsbefore your child enters, if possible, to giveschool personnel time to understand andaccept the new material.

2. Find an ally at the school, whether it is theschool nurse, teacher, counselor or administrator. This person can help communicateboth specific information about latex allergyprevention and a positive attitude about thisnew challenge to other school personnel.  

3. Provide the school with a well-organizedpacket of written material about latex allergy.This packet could include:• the SBAA Spotlight on latex allergy• the most recent SBAA latex list• this SBAA Insights pullout• a letter from the child’s health careprovider describing the allergy and theimportance of avoidance, as this mayincrease school acceptanceIf the school doesn’t already have resourcematerials that include information on latexallergy, such as Children and Youth Assisted byMedical Technology in Educational Settings (fromProject School Care, Children’s Hospital,Boston), they may be interested in obtainingit.

This second step, best performed incooperation with school personnel, involvesbecoming a latex detective. Armed with thelatex list and a recent review of likely areas ofexposure, the detectives look for clues in highrisk areas and activities:• Classroom: Items like erasers and rubberbands, art supplies, science and lab equipment may contain latex.

Many of these willcause no problem if they do not come incontact with your child.

• Cafeteria: Food preparation with latexgloves can cause latex-powder contamination.In addition, it is important for school personnel to understand the possible cross-sensitization between latex and certain foods suchas bananas, kiwi and avocado.

• Gym and playground: Check for rubbermats and reconstituted tire flooring, ballsand racquet handles.

• Housekeeping supplies: Latex gloves areoften used to protect hands during cleaningand their use in hallways, classrooms orbathrooms may leave allergic powder onsurfaces or in the air. Vinyl gloves can easilybe substituted.

• Nurse’s office: Take a very close look. Evenif a child has a separate supply of nonlatexgloves and other first aid items, proteinladen powder from latex gloves used withother children can easily contaminate surfacesand remain airborne long enough to triggera respiratory reaction
